Cutting Down a Christmas Tree

I appreciate family traditions more and more the older I get. But this one has always held a special place in my heart. For as long as I can remember (I think my parents said I was 4?) the day after Thanksgiving involves going and cutting down a Christmas Tree. We grab breakfast beforehand at a local joint, drive out west past Ann Arbor, wander through rows of trees at Arend’s Tree Farm and find the perfect one to cut down.

Now things have changed over the years, my little sister was born when I was 6, my parents divorced in 2014, and David began joining our outings in 2013.

No matter the changes, this is always a heart-warming experience, a start to the Christmas season, and family time I’ll always cherish.

This year Dave and I cut down our own (first) Christmas tree. Being on our own for the first time we wandered to the discount section, looked at many different trees and finally found one that seemed perfect for our small space, but still high ceilings. This week will involve decorating our apartment, wandering through downtown for some hot chocolate and Christmas shopping, and visiting more with family.
