Let’s Go on a Hike! Ep. 11 – Empire Bluff Trail

Welcome to Let’s Go on a Hike! Here I’ll have weekly reviews on hikes throughout Michigan (and maybe beyond). Questions like: Can I trail run this path? How much parking is available? How difficult is this trail? and many more will be answered!

The Basics

Empire Bluff Trail is a 1.5 mile out and back trail. This easy going trail still has a pretty significant elevation change for the area, 170ft.

The trail head is located off of Wilco Rd. If Traveling North on M22 turn left onto Wilco Rd, if traveling South on M22 then turn right. Follow the road down and the trail head is on the left. (Apple maps does have the proper location if you search “Empire Bluff Trail”)

The trail is mainly in a forest, but half way yields some gorgeous overlook views of Lake Michigan and bluffs. Parking available right at the trail head. The trail is wide enough for 2 people, sometimes 3. Dogs are allowed (as long as they are leashed). There is an entrance fee, you must have a Sleeping Bear Dunes Pass.

The Highlights

Some of the best views in Sleeping Bear Dunes. Not a long hike, perfect place to catch a sunset.

Great trail to hike every season.

The Warnings

Some significant elevation changes, the trail is easier on the way back.

Take caution as the trail can be icy in the winter months.

Parking can be limited in peak season, but you are able to park along the road.
