Welcome to Let’s Go on a Hike! Here I’ll have weekly reviews on hikes throughout Michigan (and maybe beyond). Questions like: Can I trail run this path? How much parking is available? How difficult is this trail? and many more will be answered!
The Basics
Sugarloaf Mountain consists of two trails, both leading to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Marquette, MI. Each trail averages about 1.2-1.5 miles. We hiked 1.3 miles of the difficult (0.7 miles) and then easy (0.6 miles) trail. This trail has pretty significant elevation change, including stairs. Which we were unfortunately not able to climb due to them being ice and snow covered.
The trail head is located off of Big Bay Rd, on the east side of the road. There is a parking lot, however, it was not plowed so we parked along Big Bay Road. (CAUTION: do not try to pull into the parking lot if your car is not 4-wheel or All-wheel drive, you will get stuck)
The trail is mainly in a forest, walking up hill. It yields gorgeous views of Presque Isle and Lake Superior, as well as the Marquette Area. Parking available right at the trail head in a parking lot, though see my previous note if you’re hiking in the winter. The trail is wide enough for 1 person, sometimes 2. Dogs are allowed (as long as they are leashed). There is no entrance fee.
The Highlights
Incredible views of Lake Superior, Presque Isle, and surrounding areas.
Not too strenuous of a hike.
Nice quick and easy way to spend a hour or less.
The Warnings
In the winter time the parking lot is not always paved, leading to parking needing to be on the street.
Note that the speed limit is 50 mph on Big Bay Rd.
