Let’s Go on a Hike! Ep. 8 – Negwegon State Park Trail

Welcome to Let’s Go on a Hike! Here I’ll have weekly reviews on hikes throughout Michigan (and maybe beyond). Questions like: Can I trail run this path? How much parking is available? How difficult is this trail? and many more will be answered!

The Basics

Negwegon State Park has over 10 miles of trails. The trail we took was a 4.6 mile out-and-back trail with minimal elevation change.

The trail head is located at the end of Negwegon State Park road, if traveling on US-23 S turn left, or if traveling on US-23 N turn right onto E Black River Rd, then a left onto Wilds Rd, take Wilds Rd down to Negwegon Park Rd and make a right, the large parking lot and trail head is at the end of the road*.

The trail is mainly in a forest, along the Lake Huron. Occasionally in a field. Tons of parking available right at the trail head. There is a water source at the trail head. The trail is wide enough for 2 people, sometimes 3. Dogs are allowed (as long as they are leashed). There is an entrance fee, you must have a state park recreation pass as well as a permit if you are backcountry camping**.

**Backcountry camping permits can be obtained by contacting this number: 989-724-5126, permits are $15/night for 1-6people in your party.

The Highlights

A gorgeous trail along Lake Huron. Benches along the way to sit and rest. Bridges along the trail were in excellent condition.

This was a very well maintained trail.

Hardly any elevation.

The Warnings

The trail was partially flooded in one portion.

*The road to get to the trail head was essential a single track, I would recommend a 4-wheel drive vehicle, though my small Ford Fusion was able to make it.
