At over a 1,000 reviews on All Trails and a 4 1/2 star rating I knew this trail would be a good one but you don’t realize how amazing it is until you hike it.
The Hieroglyphic Trail located in the Superstition Wilderness in Arizona was an absolutely breathtaking and rigorous trail to embark on for my first ever desert hike. It is an out & back trail, at about 3 miles, and 500 ft elevation change. The trail is quite rocky (I very quickly regretted the choice of Chacos) but it’s typically wide enough for 2-3 people, making it nice to walk next to one of my favorite hiking buddies (my sister) and easy to pass people, as this is a very busy trail.
Getting there, the signage is awesome and the directions from All Trails leads you right to the parking lot. There are no fees, no drinking water available there but there are some Out-Houses.
The trailhead starts out in the valley and you hike right up to the base of the mountains where you’ll find hieroglyphics all over the rocks and a stream with waterfalls. Not to mention lots of cacti and wild flowers throughout the hike. To note: be careful when climbing around the stream and waterfalls as the rock is quite polished and slippery.
If you find yourself in the Mesa/East Valley region of Arizona, I highly recommend this hike as it gives spectacular views of the Superstition Mountains and Wilderness!
